Crime Fiction with David Francis
Crime Fiction with David Francis
These first nine stories represent the past that precedes the series' tenth novel. Sitting on a remote island in the Pacific, David looks back on the memories he considers worth preserving. Within those memories lies the evolution of his character: the journey that transformed him from an ordinary young man into someone truly exceptional. It is the gradual process through which an average individual became the person he had always dreamed of becoming. The man who, in the present, is capable of taking on ten armed thugs with his bare hands was once beaten by two insignificant boys. These nine stories chronicle the defining moments that shaped his personality, forged his abilities, and ultimately determined the course of his life.
The protagonist of the series is the son of a European father who settled in India and an Indian mother. Raised in a financially privileged household, David developed an obsession with spy novels and espionage films from an early age. Fascinated by fictional intelligence agents, he gradually nurtured the ambition to become someone like them himself. That fascination began shaping every aspect of his personality. He pursued every form of physical training available to him and acquired proficiency in a wide range of technical skills, believing they would prepare him for the life he envisioned. When he finally came of age and completed his education, tragedy struck. His parents were killed in a road accident, leaving him both orphaned and entirely free to pursue the dream that had consumed him since childhood— the dream of becoming his own version of James Bond.
Reality, however, proved far less accommodating than fiction. Every step of his journey confronted him with hardships that tested not only his abilities but also his determination to continue. Instead of retreating in the face of repeated failures and life-threatening situations, David persisted. With every danger he survived and every encounter from which he narrowly escaped death, his character grew stronger. Gradually, through experience rather than fantasy, he transformed himself into the person he had always wanted to become. His obsession with living like a fictional espionage hero and dedicating his life to bringing criminals to justice may have bordered on madness— but it was far from his only obsession.
David possessed an equally profound love for nature. He had an extraordinary ability to discover beauty in every corner of the natural world. Dense forests fascinated him just as much as barren deserts. He was captivated by the vastness of the oceans and the quiet majesty of towering mountain ranges. He dreamed of travelling across the entire world— not merely to visit new places, but to experience every landscape, every culture, and every corner of creation. To him, the craftsmanship of the Creator revealed itself everywhere, in every landscape and every fragment of the earth.
Yet neither adventure nor nature was his only passion. His fascination with women was every bit as powerful. David had his own philosophy when it came to relationships. He wanted to experience the beauty and diversity of women from every corner of the world, regardless of nationality, race, or background, but he had no desire to bind himself to any relationship that demanded lasting responsibility or commitment. Women were his greatest weakness, and ever since reaching adulthood he had lived by a personal principle: "I Can't See a Damsel in Distress." Unsurprisingly, most of the extraordinary situations that defined his life began because he chose to follow that principle.
David never tried to portray himself as a moral ideal. Instead, he preferred to present himself exactly as he believed he truly was: a deeply flawed, unapologetically lustful man who loved nature, possessed an almost irrational urge to confront dangerous criminals, and found women impossible to resist. Most of his adventures began because of a woman, and many of them eventually grew into stories worth telling. By the time the narrative reaches the tenth novel, David has finally become the person he had spent his entire life striving to be.
1. Replaced
David went to sleep on the night of 7 October in his home at Khar, Mumbai. When he finally woke on the night of 15 October, everything around him had changed.
Not only had nearly three decades vanished from his life, but his body had changed as well. The energetic twenty-one-year-old had become a forty-nine-year-old man. The modest bungalow in Mumbai had been replaced by a magnificent palace in New York. More astonishing still, he was no longer David Francis— the carefree young adventurer he had always been. He had become Ryan Smith, one of New York's wealthiest and most influential businessmen.
Had he found himself imprisoned or manipulated by someone seeking control over him, he could easily have dismissed the transformation as part of an elaborate conspiracy. But he was completely free. Every privilege, every legal right, and every possession belonging to Ryan Smith was now his. If he wished, he could board a flight and return to Mumbai the very next day.
With no captor, no visible conspirator, and no apparent explanation, only one question remained.
How had such an impossible transformation taken place?

2. A Damsel in Distress
As always, whenever David Francis encounters a woman in trouble, extraordinary events are never far behind. A Damsel in Distress combines suspense, mystery, and adventure in a story where one seemingly simple rescue soon develops into something far more dangerous.
Juhi is a young woman who has recently become the target of repeated kidnapping attempts. She has no idea who is behind them. She is not even living in Manali, has no known enemies there, and certainly knows of no admirer desperate enough to abduct her. Nothing about the situation makes sense.
Her path soon crosses that of David Francis, who, true to his personal creed, cannot ignore a woman in distress. Determined to help, he attempts to protect her— but fails spectacularly. Juhi is abducted before his very eyes, leaving him with a burden he cannot simply walk away from. Until she is safely returned, leaving Manali is no longer an option.
As David digs deeper into the case, hidden secrets begin to surface, revealing the true motive behind Juhi's kidnapping. Who are the people pursuing her? Why has she become their target? And can David rescue her before it is too late?
The answers lie in A Damsel in Distress.

3. Dark Side
Behind the glamour, wealth, and dazzling lights of the entertainment industry exists a darker reality— one built upon hidden fortunes, compromise, exploitation, and a growing underground enterprise that thrives beyond public view. This concealed world, operating parallel to the glamorous façade of show business, becomes the setting for one of David Francis's most dangerous adventures.
As often happens in David's life, everything begins with what appears to be another woman in distress. Believing he is simply helping someone in need, he steps into a conflict far larger than he could have imagined. What initially seems like a straightforward act of compassion gradually pulls him into a labyrinth of dangerous secrets, powerful interests, and relentless threats, where even the rescuer repeatedly finds himself standing at the edge of death.
But appearances can be deceiving.
Is the young woman truly the victim David believes her to be? Or will the very person he is trying to protect become the greatest danger he has ever faced?

4. Orka Kaerasta
In the frozen wilderness of northern Norway, David Francis is enjoying a solitary camping expedition when an elderly stranger collapses into his lap and dies from a sudden heart attack. Before his death, the man leaves behind only a small key and two cryptic words: Orka Kaerasta.
Believing it to be his moral responsibility, David sets out to deliver these final possessions to the man's rightful heir. The journey leads him from Tromsø to Oslo, where what initially appears to be a simple task quickly develops into an increasingly complex mystery.
Identifying the rightful heir proves far from straightforward. On one side stands Morten Solheim's estranged wife, who openly despised him, along with a mentally challenged son incapable of managing any inheritance. On the other side are eight individuals who successively emerge claiming to be Morten's business partners and managers, each insisting that the inheritance belongs to them. Yet these claimants share one remarkable characteristic: they despise one another and appear willing to eliminate anyone standing in their way.
As David struggles to determine who truly deserves the dead man's final legacy, he gradually uncovers the secret hidden behind the mysterious key and the two enigmatic words. What he ultimately discovers is far more disturbing than he ever imagined.

5. Psycho Simon
The fifth novel in the David Francis series takes readers to a remote village nestled along the border between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh— a place so isolated and peaceful that crime itself seems almost impossible.
Yet wherever David Francis goes, trouble has an uncanny habit of following.
Soon after his arrival, the village's tranquil silence is shattered by a murder and a kidnapping, setting in motion a chain of events so strange that even understanding what is happening becomes a challenge. The mysterious figures moving through the surrounding wilderness appear and disappear like ghosts, leaving everyone wondering whether they are ordinary human beings or something far more unsettling.
But they are not David's only concern.
Even more perplexing is Simon, a young woman whose personality remains an enigma from beginning to end. The more time David spends with her, the less he understands her. Why does the sight of blood fascinate her? Why is she obsessed with finding imperfections in everything around her? Does she genuinely enjoy inflicting pain upon others, or does she secretly long to suffer herself? At one moment she appears innocent, vulnerable, and almost childlike; the next, she seems calculating, manipulative, and dangerously unpredictable.
As David searches for answers, even larger mysteries begin to emerge. Why has crime suddenly reached this forgotten village? Who are the mysterious figures wandering the mountains like apparitions, and what are they desperately searching for? Why are they pursuing one another with such determination? And above all, who— or what— is Simon really?
The answers gradually unfold in one of the most unusual and psychologically charged mysteries of the David Francis series.

6. The Bloody Monsoon
The sixth novel in the David Francis series, The Bloody Monsoon, takes readers into the heart of Mumbai's underworld during a time when every man at the top of the criminal hierarchy is wary of his own shadow. At the center of this world stands Sudhakar Mane, a crime boss whose empire is powerful, disciplined, and governed by an unwritten code. Yet every empire, no matter how formidable, begins to crumble the moment someone within dares to challenge its foundations.
Around the same time, a secret game begins unfolding across Mumbai— one built upon hidden truths, private vulnerabilities, and silent threats. Influential figures quietly find themselves caught in its web, though no one dares speak openly about it. Anxiety spreads through the city as a single question begins haunting everyone involved: Who is pulling the strings from the shadows, and why?
It is during this growing unrest that David Francis returns to Mumbai after a long absence.
What begins as a reunion with old friends and familiar memories quickly turns personal when an unexpected attack leaves David with a score he cannot ignore. This is no longer an investigation or another passing adventure; it becomes a matter of unfinished business. As he peels away one layer after another, he discovers that nothing is as straightforward as it first appeared. Faces that inspire trust conceal dangerous intentions, respected names hide uncomfortable truths, and the real conspiracy lies somewhere between appearances and reality.
The underworld itself is beginning to fracture. Beneath its seemingly solid structure, invisible cracks have already appeared. David's search for answers leads him into places where every step carries risk and where the line between friend and enemy grows increasingly blurred. Loyalties shift without warning, alliances collapse overnight, and survival often depends upon recognizing betrayal before it arrives.
By the time the truth finally begins to emerge, the central question is no longer who committed the crime, but who will survive the inevitable collision.
The Bloody Monsoon is a gripping crime thriller woven around organized crime, betrayal, and personal vengeance. Moving through the darkest corners of Mumbai's underworld, it delivers a story in which every decision carries consequences and every revelation demands a price. In this city, the monsoon changes far more than the weather— it changes the balance of power itself. And once the storm has passed, nothing remains quite the same again.

A plane crash. An unfamiliar desert. And a search that is anything but ordinary.
After an emergency landing in Iraq's Nineveh Province, David Francis finds himself stranded in a region where danger lurks behind every horizon and uncertainty accompanies every step. Escaping a tribal attack, he eventually joins an archaeological expedition searching for a legendary palace believed to have vanished centuries ago.
What begins as a historical exploration soon develops into something far more dangerous.
As the expedition pushes deeper into the desert, hidden ambitions gradually begin to surface. Conflicting personal agendas, outside interference, and the shadow of a treasure that has remained undiscovered for generations transform the mission into a struggle where trust becomes increasingly difficult and survival far from guaranteed.
Caught in the middle of these competing interests, David must rely on his judgment, courage, and instincts to navigate a situation growing more dangerous with every passing day.
The Buried Hoard is a fast-paced thriller that combines adventure, mystery, and relentless action into a story filled with unexpected twists, hidden motives, and discoveries capable of changing everything.

8. Sicario
A chance encounter in the violent world of Mexico's drug cartels draws David Francis into one of the deadliest conflicts of his life.
What begins as an ordinary meeting gradually turns into a desperate struggle for survival as David unwillingly becomes a pawn in a much larger game. For the first time in his life, the situation deteriorates so rapidly that he seriously considers abandoning everything— including the woman he had set out to protect. Forced to choose between his long-held principles and his own survival, he even contemplates violating the one rule he has always lived by: never leave a damsel in distress.
But escaping proves far more difficult than he imagined.
The cartels place a bounty on his head. Powerful figures operating from the shadows manipulate events without ever revealing themselves. A corrupt police officer treats brutality as an art form, while an elusive female assassin known only as La Niebla moves through the conflict like mist itself— unseen, unpredictable, and lethally efficient.
Unable to walk away, David finds himself drawn deeper into the conspiracy until there is only one way out: seeing the game through to its bloody conclusion.
What is the true nature of this deadly game? Who are the real players hiding behind the violence? And what fate ultimately awaits David Francis?
The answers unfold in Sicario.

9. No Man's Game
The ninth and perhaps most ambitious novel in the David Francis series takes readers across Pakistan in a story where danger, conspiracy, and hidden truths lie around every corner.
David's relentless instinct to help a woman in distress once again becomes the beginning of a much larger crisis. What appears to be a simple act of compassion soon leads him to the threshold of an elaborate conspiracy. Crossing that threshold, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception from which escape becomes increasingly difficult.
At the center of the story lies a covert mission whose true objective remains hidden while countless individuals are manipulated like expendable pieces on a chessboard. What begins with David's attempt to help an apparently helpless woman gradually develops into a deadly journey where every step carries greater risks than the last.
Stretching from Peshawar and the mountains of Swat to Muzaffarabad and the Neelum Valley, the narrative brings together intelligence agencies, militant organizations, arms and drug traffickers, and competing power centers whose interests repeatedly collide. The Pakistan Army, the ISI, ISKP, TTP, and several other factions each pursue their own objectives while operating against one another in a dangerous game that leaves a growing trail of casualties.
David unexpectedly becomes the fifth player in this contest— not because he chose to participate, but because his inability to ignore trouble once again places him in the middle of it. Every faction attempts to manipulate him for its own purposes. Even the women he believes to be victims may be concealing identities and intentions of their own. In this world, everyone appears to be playing a double game, and no one can be accepted at face value.
Combining espionage, organized crime, terrorism, smuggling, and political intrigue, No Man's Game evolves into the largest and most complex adventure of David's life since Sicario.
What is the hidden truth behind the conspiracy? What is the real mission for which so many lives are being sacrificed? What role does the mysterious fortune at the center of the conflict actually play? And what exactly is the meaning of the code name Syah-Safed?
The answers await in No Man's Game.

10. The Claimant
The Claimant tells the story of Anna, a young woman whose inheritance of a vast fortune became a curse long before she was old enough to understand its consequences. Raised under relentless control, exploitation, and abuse, she grows into adulthood stripped of confidence and self-worth, living as little more than a puppet whose existence is dictated entirely by her father's wishes.
Eventually, however, she chooses to fight back.
Determined to reclaim both her freedom and her future, Anna turns to David Francis—the carefree adventurer from Mumbai whose life has always revolved around three unshakable passions: an endless love for nature and travel, an irresistible attraction to beautiful women, and an almost obsessive determination to bring dangerous criminals to justice. Those three obsessions have filled his life with uncertainty, chaos, and constant danger, but David has never once wished for a quieter existence.
The obstacle standing before them is Wagle, a man whose influence extends far beyond wealth and social standing. Ruthless, politically connected, and deeply involved in organized crime, he possesses the power to intimidate even those who should have the authority to oppose him. Escaping his control is no simple task— not for Anna, and certainly not for David.
Yet walking away is never an option.
For David, this single battle offers everything that has always driven him: the breathtaking beauty of Goa, the company of remarkable women like Anna, Ellie, and Zinnia, and a formidable criminal whose defeat will demand every skill he has spent a lifetime developing.
In The Claimant, personal freedom, justice, and revenge converge in a gripping thriller where every victory must first be earned, and every choice carries lasting consequences.
